Fall sports wrap up part 1

Football

As the post season begins, most of the Cerritos College teams anticipate their participation in its games.

The football team will be appearing the Golden Empire bowl that will be played on Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. at Bakersfield.

The bowl is the most prestigious non-playoff bowl.

The Falcons finished 7-3 and showed flashes of brilliance by beating, at the time they played, the No. 1 team in Southern California, Mt. SAC in triple overtime.

They are a young team and this winning season should help in recruiting as well as rebuild the winning tradition of the football team.

Men’s Soccer

This year’s team won the South Coast Conference and features the conference MVP, Luis Gonzalez, and Defensive Player of Year, Jonathon Rivas.

Gonzalez led the Falcons with 54 points and scored 20 goals.

The Falcons will try to avenge their loss to Santa Ana in last season third round playoff game.

They will wait to see whom they will play on Nov. 25 at Cerritos College.

Women’s Soccer

This season women’s soccer team went undefeated, won the South Coast Conference, ranked No. 1 in the country, and were seeded No. 1 in the state playoffs.

They are led by forward Monique Cisneros who has 78 points and 34 goals.

She was also recently named Female Athlete of the Month for October by CCCAA.

They will open their playoff run against San Bernardino Valley at Cerritos College on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.

No band , no National Anthem

During Saturday night’s football game against College of the Desert the band was not there so there was no National Anthem.

Really, there is on plan for this? The school did not think about having a CD to use just incase the band didn’t go to a game.

Maybe it's just me, but every sporting event I have ever been to in my entire life, and there have been many, I have always heard the National Anthem.

Even when I played Little League baseball, like 20-years ago, it was played before the game.

The only reason I know the words to the National Anthem is because of going to games.

I even know most of the words to the Canadian National Anthem because of hockey.

But still it’s a tradition that shows people why they are able to enjoy those games and not take them so seriously because, well, it's just a game and nobody should die over that.

It gives us pride in our nation.

I guess its not that big of a deal to most people, but for those, like myself that served in the military and fought for the freedoms that everyone enjoys today it was a little disrespectful.

Even though the rules that govern the states football community college football games say that the National Anthem does not need to be played, it should be.

Even if you don’t agree with the direction that this country is going, just remember that you can voice that opinion without reprisal.
